Flag of Malawi Size: The flag of Malawi which is also known as Chichewa is a tri-color flag. It has a rectangular shape. The colors present in the flag of the country are black, red, and green. There are three horizontal bands in the flag. All the bands are equal in length and height. The color ratio of the flag is 1:1:1. The first band is black with a red rising sun with 31 rays in total. The second band is red, and the third one is green. All the bands are equal to each other. The flag was officially adopted in 1964 but later on, it was re-adopted in 2012 after a few modifications. The flag’s proportion is 2:3. Meaning: The flag has three colors in it and an emblem on the first band of the flag. The flag represents the uprising of the nation and also reflects history. The red color in the flag represents the struggle while gaining independence and it also represents the life loss of the Malawi people while fighting for independence. The black color in the flag represents the people of the country. As Malawi is an African country most of the people there are black people. The green color in the flag represents the nature and landscape of the country. The rising sun with 31 rays symbolizes the fact that Malawi is the 31st African country to gain independence. History: The new flag was first adopted in 2010 and, in this flag Pan-African colors were used. The rising sun was changed to full sun. The red stripe was on top, the middle stripe was black and green was the last one. The sun used in the flag had 45 rays which were representing the economic progress of the country. But, later on, in 2012, under the new rule parliament of Malawi voted to revert to the independence flag which was adopted in 1964. The flag was adopted once again, and the flag has never been changed since. Interesting facts: The flag of Malawi was changed in 2010 but the changed version lasted for just 2 years and in 2012 the old or the original flag was reverted. The colors in the flag are pan-African colors. These colors symbolize the whole of Africa and are used by many African nations. The colors are the national colors of the African nations.
