Flag of Australia: Size: The flag of Australia is a tri-color flag. The colors included in the flag of Australia are red, white, and blue. The base color of the flag is blue and there are 6 stars in total. One star is smaller, and it has five points while others are bigger and have 7 points. There is a union jack at the top left side of the flag, which is close to the hoist. The flag was adopted in 1908, almost 113 years ago. The proportion of the flag is 1:2 as most of the flags in the world. Meaning: The flag of Australia has three elements on it in total. The blue field, Union Jack, and the stars in the flag. Union Jack has three diagonals or crosses in it and it represents the history of the British settlements in the past. The first cross is in red and it is St George’s Cross of England, while the second one is in white and it is St Andrews cross of Scotland. The third one is again in red and it is St Patrick’s cross of Ireland. The stars present in the flag represent the states and the territories of the Commonwealth of Australia. The blue color represents hope and peace. History: In 1901 international competition to design the flag was organized during the time of Australia’s first Prime Minister Rt Hon Sir Edmund Barton. Almost 32,823 designs were received and, from these designs, 5 designs were chosen and were declared five joint winners. These five shared the price of £200. From these 5 designs, a new flag was designed and adopted. The first flag was flown in 1901 at an Exhibition Building. The flag stayed for some time, and later in 1908 few modifications were made to the flag and the flag was redesigned. The flag was once again adopted and the flag has never been changed since. Interesting facts: The first flag of Australia was designed from the five designs received in a flag competition held. The five joint winners shared a price of £200. The first flag of Australia was flown in Melbourne at a royal exhibition building. When the flag was flown, the Prime Minister of Australia was present there. The union jack in the flag of Australia is used by other countries in their flag too. There is a national flag day which is celebrated in Australia on 3rd September. 2,969,907 7,692,024
